DP50 Sash Kits?
Does anyone know of a manufacturer making Sash kits that are DP50 rated? I'm replacing windows in a mid 70's brick ranch and I'd like to not downsize the glass area. The original frames are in great shape. I've installed sash kits on jobs many years ago but code now calls for DP50 rating in my area....

Re: Sears vinyl windows?
Any pictures? The "Sears" window was made by several different folks over the years and they merely put their name on the product and sold it. Not sure why I didn't get notification of your reply but I see it now, thanks. Unfortunately I didn't think to take a picture while I was there. H...

Sears vinyl windows?
I was showing a circa 2006 custom house to a client and was surprised to see Sears windows. Perhaps more surprising is that they looked good and had a clever tilt release system that was built into the window locks. Unfortunately, they also have an issue where on most of them, the top sash drops a h...

Re: replacing aluminum windows with vinyl
Yep, there's those two ways to do it and it looks like there's two differing opinions (sort of) on the methods. Budget will only allow so high a quality window and so far what I've seen (not that much yet) has the molding profile built in that I mentioned above. If I add trim tight against that prof...

Re: replacing aluminum windows with vinyl
As usual my life is too busy and I'm just now getting back to this. I was leaning towards replacing just the glass, but I'm changing my mind and leaning towards the increased home value that the vinyl windows would give. So here's my latest question... The house is 1x8 bevel cedar sided and I'm inte...

Re: replacing aluminum windows with vinyl
Thanks for the replies. I haven't had time to look into color options yet but I will before I decide which way to go.

Re: replacing aluminum windows with vinyl
This is the best pic I have to show the windows. 99.jpg As you can see, they're not trimmed out and only on the front are they set off with the pseudo shutters. I thought to just cut the cedar siding around the window to the exact dimension that would allow brickmold or some other trim. Then I'd be ...

Re: replacing aluminum windows with vinyl
LH, The upgrade from white to tan/almond/beige is usually very inexpensive and sometimes not an upgrade at all. In this case, I am referring to the tan vinyl and not the painted finish. The interior will be tan as well. Vinyl, if it fits your requirements, will likely be cheaper than aluminum. Hmmm...

replacing aluminum windows with vinyl
I have a mid 80's house w/aluminum windows (Alenco windows, I think). They have so many failed thermopanes that I thought it's time to replace them. Unfortunately they're dark bronze color and the trim on the house is a sort of almond and includes vinyl soffit and aluminum fascia the same color. Are...

Re: Simonton 5050
Any tips on how to trim the little snap in trim strip that comes with the Simonton windows? One of the four windows I replaced had a pretty out-of-square brick opening and while I fit the window in ok the margins at the top and bottom are a bit skewed. The windows came with a little trim strip that ...

Re: Simonton 5050
Thanks Bill, that's a kind offer. I'll talk to the guy at ABC to see if he can get me some thru Simonton first but if that doesn't happen I'll take you up on it.

Re: Anyone....Simonton 5050 series windows?
Gary, I just installed a few of these on a rental I own. As is said above, they're fine as an entry level window. The windows I got were from ABC Supply (here in Charleston but they're a chain) and were re-branded with a "Grand Estates" name but I'm pretty sure it's the same window as the ...

Re: Simonton 5050
I finally got started on the windows on Sunday afternoon. I got 3 of the 4 in and I'm happy to report that they seem fine for my purposes. The only trouble I had was one window was missing the screen and another had the "receiver" of the lock ripped out of it's moorings. The lock half and ...

Re: Options for a long slider
Thanks for that info Bill. I'll still plan to call ABC Supply on Monday and I'll look into the 5500 series specifically. (that is if the customer doesn't order a window from Lowes this weekend.)
