Casing and apron size
I recently replaced our old, metal casements with double hung vinyl windows. We have a brick house with masonry construction. The old windows had a stool and apron on the bottom of the window, and plaster returns from the interior wall to window jamb face. I removed those plaster returns to take out...

Re: Water in double hung sash
Thanks shamu. I figured that was the case, but wanted to make sure everything is ok.

Water in double hung sash
I replaced my old windows with Simonton 5500's this summer. It doesn't happen on all of the windows, but some windows appear to have water in the sash. When I remove the sash to clean it and I tilt the sash to one side a small amount of water drips out of the weep holes on the bottom of the sash. Is...

Re: Masonry installation
Thanks for the advice. I did use quad all around, and found it remained workable for a sufficiently long time. Another question related to caulking - Most of the other windows have an angle iron header that is offset 1/2" - 5/8" inside of the brick stop. So, if I put the window in the open...

Re: Masonry installation
That's the dilemma. Most of the windows require about 12 ft of caulked surface, with a picture window getting up to 28 ft. I plan to fit the window, predrill, remove, caulk, and set it. How long before it skins over?

Re: Masonry installation
The brick opening is slightly recessed on the header and sill so I decided to use the brick opening as a stop for the window. I plan to caulk against the inside face of the brick before inserting the window and then going around the outside joint between the window and brick with caulk as well. The ...

Simonton 5500 window dimensions
Does anyone have an extra DH 5500 hanging around? I'm trying to determine the distance between the outside of the window frame to the base of the screen housing. This is the part that will typically but up against the sash stop and face outside. I called Simonton and they sent CAD drawings, but the ...

Re: Masonry installation
I think the screw holes will best align with the masonry block in order to maintain proper setback from the outside face of the brick using either method. Because the masonry opening is so large I'm thinking of framing it out (tapcon into block) and then screwing into wood frame. This frame will als...

Masonry installation
I have a brick rowhouse with the original single-pane steel casements. The construction is brick on the outside, a 1" cavity, 4" masonry block, and then plaster, going outside to inside. I cut away the plaster around the window to get a better idea of things. The opening in the masonry blo...

Re: BF Rich Cabernet and Simonton 5500 - best value
Thanks Skydawggy. I'm actually planning to install them myself, and after looking at the Impressions I think we're going to go with the Reflections. Do you have any thoughts on the different glass packages? I think I read in another post that the Superspacer upgrade will make the window qualify (wit...

Re: BF Rich Cabernet and Simonton 5500 - best value
Thanks, Mike. Do you have an idea how much more the Impressions series would run? I do like the Superspacer and thought about that upgrade for the Reflections. Any thought on if thats worth it?

BF Rich Cabernet and Simonton 5500 - best value
I've been reading this forum for a while and would like some opinions. I will be installing the windows myself, but hiring a contractor to help me install the first few. As such, I'm comparing prices of the windows themselves. I've read more positive things about the 5500, but nothing really negativ...
