Re: Mulled windows
I'd go with twins in the 78" openings, and large DH's in the single. Your sizes are right on the fringe where the windows are either going to look really big or really small, and I don't think that you'll be happy if they are small. You'll see a ton of frame material, and lose a lot of light (...

Re: How do you deliver your quotes?
No, the only follow up I received from the chicken scratch company was a call to tell me they were offering an additional 10% off due to some manufacturer's special

How do you deliver your quotes?
OK - I've gotten 5 quotes and it's amazing how varied the level of detail has been. One quote was on official stationary and broke down the project into 2 pieces (at my request). It listed the 2 overall prices and the specifics of the window model. This was delivered on the spot after the unofficial...

Re: Mulled windows
The max size available for most of the windows I've been considering is 50" but that seems like it would be really weird looking, especially w/out grids which I do not want. I have 2 openings that currently have picture windows with casements on either side that are 78" total. I am debatin...

Re: Mulled windows
Thanks for all the helpful info! I'd like to get some additional input from those who look at these every day. I'm finalizing my layouts for how many dh's in each opening. I have some wide windows that could be 3 or 4 dhs, 2 or 3, 1 or 2. Aesthetically, what is an eye pleasing ratio of windows to wi...

Re: Best way to select a window and installer
Finally had Rite Window out here and got the details on the window. They are no longer using Gorrel (he said something about them going into receivership?). The window they are using now is by National Vinyl (a local MA company) and is the Northwind Series III model. Some of the features he touted w...

Re: Mulled windows
Looking at our current wood casement windows, the trim between the panes is about 4". Would I expect to see similar w/ vinyl dhs mulled together?

Mulled windows
For mulled dh widows, what is the typical width of the vinyl piece(s) where 2 windows are joined? I'm changing from casement to dh windows and have some decisions to make about some of the larger openings when it comes to how many windows in each opening. Is there an average width for this piece? I ...

Re: Best way to select a window and installer
I've been avoiding the local companies that do heavy radio and tv advertising on the assumption that they are high pressure/low quality. I was just checking for a Gorrel dealer in my area and it looks like Rite Window (one of the ones I assumed was junk) is using Gorrel manufactured windows. The 510...

Re: Best way to select a window and installer
Got a quote from the local guy on Harvey slimline (which is the model for the performance stats I had posted earlier). 23 DH (mulled together in various combinations - only 7 openings are small enough to go with a single DH) 2 Sliders (basement small windows) 1 Picture window w/ 2 DH flanking it (to...

Question about standard/best practice for my installation
Hi. I've had a few companies out here to get some pricing and I've gotten some conflicting information on how they need to do the work. Big box #1 didn't really discuss specifics about the installation method. It was pouring the day they were here so we did not look at the windows from the outside. ...

Re: Best way to select a window and installer
+1 to Todd's post. Those numbers are pretty much the bare minimum required by Energy Star and are achievable by just about every product. By comparison, there are great options that can achieve as low as .25 -.26 u value out of a double pane without sacrificing the SHGC or condensation resistance. ...
