Re: Does this quote seem sane?
1995-era awful double pane aluminum windows are coming out. I'm redoing the stucco at the same time, so they are going to do a flush install with no exterior trim/fin thing. The windows are 7/8" double pane units, have no grids, and are treated with SolarBan 60 or 70 (depending on orientation) ...

Does this quote seem sane?
I got a quote for replacement windows from a local business (http://www.glass-rite.com/window-replacement/energyquest-vinyl-windows/). My house has a bunch of different sized windows so the prices per window vary. But the installed price they're offering me for a 3x3 slider is $451. A 5x3 slider is ...

Re: Patio doors with the lowest air infiltration
What window is that and where are you located? I know of a couple of doors that are sub 0.06 air infiltration rates. Albuquerque, NM, and http://www.glass-rite.com/window-replacement/energyquest-vinyl-windows/ I'd love your opinion on whether their windows look any good. I've corresponded with them...

Re: Patio doors with the lowest air infiltration
Patio doors will inherently have slightly higher numbers based on their designs. Even the best units are only in the mid 0.05 range most of the time. I know, and that makes sense, given that a sliding seal is inherently less airtight than a compressible gasket. That said, there's a local company th...

MI Windows & Doors
Are these any good? They seem to be very popular in my neck of the woods of New Mexico. Their performance numbers seem pretty good, and I have some family members who replaced some old aluminum single-pane windows with MI's offerings a few years ago and have been very happy with them. What do the ex...

Patio doors with the lowest air infiltration
Does anyone know who makes a sliding patio door with decent air infiltration numbers? Unfortunately, the most well-regarded offerings (Okna, Soft-lite, Sunrise, etc) are not available where I live so I can't consider those. Jeld-Wen's are about 0.1. Milgard's are 0.1 - 0.2, depending on the size. Si...

Re: What are all the things that are wrong with Jeld-Wen windows
That all makes sense. I figured it had to be too good to be true! And I totally get that the true zen master cheapskate move is actually buying the highest quality product that never needs replacement. :) Unfortunately, while I am willing to spend the cash for some quality windows, Okna, Himark, Sun...

What are all the things that are wrong with Jeld-Wen windows
Still shopping around for good windows for my dry sunny climate, but I happened to pass by the window section in Home Depot the other day and checked out their selection of vinyl Jeld-Wens. I was pleasantly surprised by the specs listed on the NFRC label. U-0.29, 0.22 SHGC, 0.1 AI, under $150 per wi...

Thanks, HomeSealed.
Randy, about how long can you expect high-quality, sash-reinforced vinyl windows to last in your part of Texas before they physically break?

Re: Do I want low-SHGC windows on the east and west sides?
I live a little bit north of the Albuquerque area. Hot summers and cold winters. Right now I have 42-year-old double-pane aluminum windows. They were probably pretty early double pane units since their thermal performance--glass and frame--is terrible. The gap between the panes is like a quarter of ...

Do I want low-SHGC windows on the east and west sides?
I live in sunny New Mexico and am doing research for having my windows replaced. I'm torn on the question of whether I want low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) windows, though. My house faces east-west with only two small, unshaded windows on the south side. Most of the windows are east or west, ...

Re: Just how UV-stable are these windows?
Yikes, the energy performance of those aluminum windows looks terrible. Don Young windows are advertising U-0.42. some local guys are advertising U-0.44. Those numbers just seem really bad compared to ≤ U-0.3 you can get from vinyl. But if it won't last… Anyone here have experience installing vinyl ...

Re: Just how UV-stable are these windows?
Great advice from HomeSealed. I seriously doubt any vinyl window will last 50 years in your environment, and I'm not even real sure if one could last 25 years. What's certain is that low-end vinyl windows won't hold up long at all, and even mid-grade vinyl windows will probably begin to have issues...

Just how UV-stable are these windows?
I live in super-sunny high-altitude New Mexico and am wondering how your typical vinyl windows hold up in this kind intense, year-round sun exposure. I know that UV stabilizers are added, but are these like sacrificial anodes in that they eventually give up the ghost, or do they actually impart perm...
