Both are the premium windows from Sunrise with the Restorations being held for the loyal and largest dealers. Vanguard was created for all of the Plygem dealers that once delt with Great Lakes that didn't have the Uniframe model as it was Great Lakes top of the line. Both of the window models from ...

Re: new windows for home construction

We are building a house. I am confused on window options. We live in East Tennessee. We have quotes on atrium 450 double hung windows. Also have a quote from hurd windows. Hurd is much more expensive. We will be using hardwood floors throughout the home, so I am concerned about sun protection. Coul...

Re: Well it's down to 2 - Simonton or Jeld-wen

Hello all- Great forum! I've done quite a bit of research here and narrowed my choice in replacement windows down to either Simonton 5500 or Jeld-wen (builders line). Just wanted to get your thoughts as to which window would be a better choice. Both are almost equal in price so that's not the issue...

The Earthwise window is very average at best. They have switched to a constant force sometime ago but beyond that, the window is very mediocre

Get examples of their work and talk to some of their previous customers. Look for referrals from boards like this and educate yourself as to the important factors in a good window replacement.

Re: Replacement Windows for DC-Area Property

My wife and I are looking for replacement windows for a DC-area home that we are renting out to a group of graduate students. The theme throughout this website seems to be that it's better to pick small local shops instead of the big box companies, but we're concerned about finding a small company ...

Re: Reply

If by, "Inner glass", you are referring to the glass surfaces trapped between two panes, you are out of luck and the units must be replaced. Even if you could clean and seal them effectively they would perform about the same as a 1960's single pane with a storm. Overall R-value of 1.5-1.7...

Re: single hung vs DH, low-e vs low-e + Argon

We've scheduled some companies to come measure and give us a quote for new windows, and we're trying to find the midpoint between "the best money can buy" and "the best OUR money can buy." Existing windows are 1954, single pane, with storms, so pretty much anything will be an im...

Thanks! I'm all for ditching the storms, but my husband (who would seal up every window with fiberglas insulation if he thought it would save money/energy! and if he didn't have a wife to stop him...) wondered if we'd get better energy savings with them. Good to know (for me) it could even damage o...

No, but there are reasons not to keep the storms. Vinyl windows should not be used with storms windows. It traps too much heat and can reach the heat of deformation for vinyl and cause problems for your new window. Ditch the storms.

There are several lines out there that should fit your requirements. You need to match the bronze on your existing windows to a current foil (laminate) offering. That would be step one.

I am looking at welded, multi-chambered, LowE, Argon, Double Hung vinyl windows to replace my current wood windows. no real benefits between the two frame extrusions in the 5500 or 9800. The 9800 is prettier and comes standard with double strength glass. The Super Sensor is not a listed option with the 5500 but that does not mean it is not an available option.

You will be happy either way.
