Re: Anyone "in the know" on entry doors too ??

I like Therma Tru. You can finish it your self and save money or get it prefinished paint or stain. I am looking at Therma Tru doors and this is what I was told by one dealer... He said: Staining the Therma Tru doors is not a DIY project. He said that because the fiberglass does not absorb the stai...

Re: Need Advice On Using Backer Rod

Thanks for the response. Foam is an option that I hadn't thought of. I've tried foam in the past and while I'm sure it's me, I didn't get the results I was looking for. Maybe that's why it never entered my mind. :?: I'll consider it. To answer your side question... I went with a slider because the c...

Need Advice On Using Backer Rod

I just installed a slider in place of a casement and I'm having trouble filling the gap at the top of the window. I used backer rod on all the other windows I've installed in my house, but this last one is kicking my butt. I have about a 3/8" gap at the top of the window that I need to caulk be...

What to use for exterior stops?

I'm going to be replacing a double casement with a 2-view slider. I know I'll need to add exterior stops, but I'm not sure what to use - wood or vinyl, fancy or plain. The exterior trim is currently wrapped in aluminum up to the casement panes, so once I remove the casement, I'm assuming I'll be abl...

How to measure for 2-view Slider?

I want to replace a double casement over my sink with a 2 view slider. I measured for the 12 double hungs (6 different sizes) that I replaced last year and got them right, but I hear that casement openings can be tricky. It looks to me like I should simply measure from side to side and top to bottom...

Re: Center Post Width - Casement vs. Slider

You are probably 36 x 37-5/8. The rough opening is actually closer to 38 1/2 by 37 1/2, currently an all wood double casement in a house built in the 50's. In the recent years we are using more single casements and awnings over the sink... I considered both of these when I made my mockup, but SWMBO...

Center Post Width - Casement vs. Slider

The Question: How wide is the center "post" of a slider? (I know it's not really a "post"...please read on) The Situation: I'm trying to decide between an awning, a single casement, a double casement or a slider for the 37" x 37" window over my kitchen sink. SWMBO is le...

How do I measure for Casment Window?

I need some help measuring for a replacement double casement window. Is it as easy as just measuring from the sill to the top of the window and then side to side? In other words, is the rough opening already exposed? The current wooden window has the crank mechanisms screwed into the flat interior s...

Both panels of my Crestline door (20 years old by now) are fairly easy to remove. Of course, "easy" is all relative and you didn't say how often you might have to do this. There's a ~3/4" x 3/4" strip of wood across the top of the door, interior of the sliding panel. 5 vertical s...

Simonton Bronze Windows

What about frosted plexiglass, thinnest I can find, held away from the glass by spacers, say 3/8 to a 1/4 inch?

Do you think that would alleviate any heat build up issues?

Adding Frosting To Replacement Windows

What are my options for obscuring the view through a VRW while still allowing light and not voiding any warranties? East facing window that gets some morning sun at an angle but no direct sunlight for hours at a time. I've seen the stick on film at the home centers and even considered some frosted p...

My only thoughts on open cell vs. closed cell backer rod is that I hoped I used the right stuff. :? I asked the counter guy at the place I bought it and he wasn't sure - no one had ever asked before. This was a major contractor's supply house - Cook Iron Store - http://www.heavydutystore.com/About_U...

Thanks for the update. I guess western NY is in the East Coast region cuz I got the snap-in strip. The blocks I used provided enough of a backer for the strip that caulking was no problem. By the way - have you looked into backer rod for the interior caulk joints? I learned about it in this forum an...
