Well this is my 1st foray into window replacements. I am in central FL. I have received 3 quotes (1 Simonton - 5500, 1 Alside - Excalibur, 1 Silverline - 8500), and have another 3 scheduled (1 Simonton, 1 Alside, 1 I don;t know what they have access to).
In the interim, I have been reading a lot on this board and educating myself. I have learned that from the windows I have been quoted, the Simonton 5500 is the highest quality. The Simonton quote was $9175. The others were around $6600-$6800.
The Simonton quote was $9175 for everything.
Windows are 5500's with Intercept spacer, Low E, Argon, double strength, DP-35 for everything (is this the metal reinforcement.), colonial sculptured grids in non-obscured items, etc. Items are:
qty 3 - 52 x 61.5 double hung
qty 1 - 73 x 74 double hung
qty 1 - 73 x 36.5 half round picture
qty 2 - 36 x 61.5 double hung
qty 1 - 73 x 61.5 double hung
qty 1 - 36 x 61.5 double hung obscure
qty 1 - 47 x 35.5 picture obscure
qty 1 - 25.5 x 37 double hung obscure
qty 1 - 73 x 18.25 picture
How does this quote sound to all of you? I am looking to get another Simonton quote.
Simonton quote - can I do better and how much
I would stay away from the Silverline products and the Excalibur for that matter. If you like the company selling the Alside ask them to quote on the Sheffield from Alside. But shame on him for offering you that marginal window in such large sizes.
The Simonton 5500 and the Alside Sheffield would be two good windows for price comparison
The Simonton 5500 at a DP 35 may or may not have the reinforcement but in Florida where you can get strong storms I would configure a 5500 in the manner listed below.
36" (T) X 61 1/2" (T) 5500 Reflections White Double Hung; Tip-to-Tip; BOX; 1'' IGU Thickness; Super Spacer; Low E Softcoat (Prosolar); Argon Gas; Double Glazed; Double Strength (1/8"); Half Screen Fiberglass Extruded Screen Mold; A9 All Rails&Stiles; Two Air Latches; Two White; Logo Lock; Head Expander; Sill Extender; Glass Warranty (UI=98"); DP:65; Test Number=64468.01; U-Factor:.31; SHGC:.29; Unit qualifies for ENERGY STAR region(s): Northern, North Central, South Central, Southern
Good Luck,
Bill

Thanks Bill. I am heavily leaning towards the Simonton. Thank you for the specs. For the specs I offered, is the quote high?
My gut says the quote should be between $7700 and $8K (but I may be all wet).
The applicable specs I was quoted on using yours were:
36" (T) X 61 1/2" (T) 5500 Reflections White Double Hung; Tip-to-Tip; BOX+FL; Colonial All White Sculptured (2V1H); Intercept; Low E Softcoat (Prosolar); Argon Gas; Double Glazed; Double Strength (1/8"); Full Screen Fiberglass Extruded Screen Mold; 00 No Reinforcement; Two Air Latches; Two White; Logo Lock; Glass Warranty (UI=98"); DP:50; Test Number=63690.01; U-Factor:.35; SHGC:.26; Unit qualifies for ENERGY STAR region(s): Northern, North Central, South Central, Southern

I agree completely with Bill.
As to the pricing; it is always difficult to judge without knowing more about the installation detail. If the installation is basic, with easy access, brick or siding exterior, the price is probably a little high ($750.00 - $1500.00).
Try some negotiation, and get them to include the upgrades listed by Bill.
