Glass loss on Pocket vs. full frame install...

#1 Post by mtmconsumer »

Just wondering how much glass loss I would would have when moving from old wood window (inside and out) frames to a vinyl window.

Also is there a difference in glass loss for a full frame replacement vs just a pocket preplacement (these are for casement windows new windows would be Soft-Lite Imperial LS)?

Any help?

i would imagin the glass loss would be minimal, going from wood frames to vinyl. you might even gain a few inches. in my experience, old wood main frames are rather bulky. new vinyl frames, in comarison are a little smaller.

#2. if you were to go with a full frame replacement. you would gain a signifigant amount of glass surface area. by doing a pocket install, your effectively making the rough opening smaller, by placing the new frame inside the older one. there may be other hidden "negatives" by doing a pocket job...

Glass loss is the biggest drawback to an insert or pocket installation.

If they are both done right, there is not other real drawback to an insert window.

With a typical insert install you are not going to adress the air infiltration and insulation between the rough opening and the
and the prime buck.

Yeah, depending on how badly your home is insulated, it may not matter. but if the installer removes the trim and fills it with insulation, it will help and still be better priced than a full case removal.
