Gorell 5100 vs 5300
First of all, thanks so much to everyone in this forum. I have been researching replacement vinyl windows over the last couple of weeks and used this forum extensively.
I had a Gorell dealer come to the house last night and he recommended the following replacement windows:
10 Gorell 5100 DH w/ EcoMaster Glass (Almond color)
Price: $3930.00 installed
I asked him about the 5300 model and he stated that it wouldn't make much difference in efficiency, only add $400 to the bid. ($40 per window)
A few questions to all you pros:
Is this a decent price for the windows quoted?
Should I stick with the EcoMaster Glass or move up to a higher grade glass package?
Is it worth the $400 to go with the 5300 over the 5100?
I live in the Memphis, TN area and my budget for replacing the windows is $500-$600 per window.

Re: Gorell 5100 vs 5300
The 5300 has a lower air infiltration rate .08 vs .17, but it comes at the cost of bigger (fatter) frame and sash extrusions. The 5300 also will get the identical numbers with AC master as will the 5100 with eco master glass packages. The eco master uses an additional layer of low e which might be more benefical in your climate because the solar heat gain co-efficency is lower. I.E it will block more of the solar heat in the warmer months.
The 5300 is a tank and Gorell is a great company. You'll be equally happy with either choice.

I agree with buddy. Personally, I like the extra glass and "cleaner" look of the 5100 at very minimal ratings deficiency, but both are very good and will serve you well.

I read on another post that a "FG reinforcement" could be added to the 5100 series windows to reduce the AI to .09. Is this correct information? And what does the "FG" stand for? Fiberglass?

To my knowledge the FG (fiberglass) reinforcement doesn't lower the AI.WindowNewb wrote:I read on another post that a "FG reinforcement" could be added to the 5100 series windows to reduce the AI to .09. Is this correct information? And what does the "FG" stand for? Fiberglass?

+1. I do like the upgrade of the fg reinforcement and foam filled frame though.buddy110 wrote:To my knowledge the FG (fiberglass) reinforcement doesn't lower the AI.WindowNewb wrote:I read on another post that a "FG reinforcement" could be added to the 5100 series windows to reduce the AI to .09. Re: Gorell 5100 vs 5300
fiber glass reinforcement will add to the design pressure rating; raising it to a DP 50. in theory you would think it will also lower the AI as well due to reduced deflection.

Re: Gorell 5100 vs 5300
Is the 5155 a different model of Gorell window all together or a 5100 with a specific configuration? Buddy mentioned that a Gorell 5155 w/ FG reinforcement has an AI of .09 in the following thread.

Re: Gorell 5100 vs 5300
In reality, should I give much weight to the AI rating?

WindowNewb, AI has been somewhat of a "hot button" issue. I don't anticipate much controversy, however, in saying that both of the products that you are considering are high-quality, solid performers with a great track-record. Assuming proper installation, you'll see little if any perceptible or measurable ($$ savings on energy) difference between the two. If you like the more "substantial" look and feel, go for the 5300. If you prefer the slimmer lines, choose the 5100.

Re: Gorell 5100 vs 5300
Is the difference between the two windows AI perceivable? That's the question. If you can physically notice air infiltration then that difference is important. However the more important piece is that the insulation needs to be tight. If you got the 5300 windows and they don't get installed well that AI won't mean anything.
Re: Gorell 5100 vs 5300
I don't disagree with Homesealed. AI isn't the most critical rating for selecting windows, it is simply one factor, among many, to consider. Gorell makes well regarded windows, and their reputation for CS is excellent.
Personally, I like to see AI ratings below .10, but wouldn't totally throw out a window up to .18. Above that is probably a deal killer for me though. JMO

I highly doubt that you would physically notice a difference.
