Can New Vinyl Windows or Sealant Produce "Sweet" Smell?

#1 Post by TempleDrake »

I recently moved into a new apartment, and there is a very pungent “sweet” smell throughout. This was not present when I viewed the apartment (I’m extremely sensitive to smells/suffer from bad allergies), so this is something I pay attention to. I know that the landlord replaced three vinyl windows a few days before I moved in. I would attribute the smell to off-gassing, but it is more of an organic, “sweet” smell as opposed to chemicals. So, my question is - can vinyl windows (or any of the caulking/putty used) give off a sweet smell when off gassing? I slept there one night, and experienced throat irritation - and the smell is so pungent, I can taste it in my mouth. Any help trying to identify the smell - as related to new vinyl windows - would be helpful.

Wouldn't be coming from the vinyl window itself, but likely the sealants used.

Especially in the case of a Landlord/owner, they will use the cheapest labor possible and that "contractor" probably used a crap sealant.

Usually clears out in a week or so. I would either leave that room open to air out or make sure you are ventilating.
