From over 50 million in yearly sales to bankruptcy court

#1 Post by utoo »

Today Penguin Windows in Washington state filed for bankruptcy protection. Salespersons promised 40% fuel savings and the AG wanted proof.

In Illinois, the BBB reduced Feldco's rating to "No Rating". They cited Feldco's use of "free" in their advertising. Feldco retaliated with a $50,000 lawsuit against the BBB. Amusing.

Re Penguin. When I first started researching windows for my last home in MA a couple years ago, it did not take more than a Google search to discover that Penguin was one of those "buyer beware" window companies, lots of horror stories about sleazy high-pressure sales tactics, etc. I seem to recall reading that they had even renamed themselves after their previous incarnation was the subject of lawsuits and various other bad publicity. Given how easy it is for consumers to find such information nowadays, it's got to be hard for a company like that to stay in business unless they have some other compelling advantage, like brand recognition or a corner on the local market.

IIRC the window sold by Penguin was actually a decent product (high-end window made by Great Lakes/Plygem/whatever).

post was deleted because i downplayed the significance of the bankruptcy. many companies have filed and not only survived but prospered. perhaps penguin will not but only time will tell. i also mentioned some banks as well.
